The 2024 edition of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival will run from October 19 to 24, promising a spectacular six-day celebration of world cinema, creativity, and culture. This year’s festival is marked by several significant milestones, including the opening night feature and a special honour for a veteran of Indian cinema.
MAMI Mumbai Film Festival Opening Night: All We Imagine as Light

The festival will kick off on October 18 with the screening of “All We Imagine as Light,” directed by Payal Kapadia. This film has already made history as the first Indian production to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the 77th Festival de Cannes. Set in Mumbai, the narrative follows three women: Nurse Prabha, her younger roommate Anu, and Parvati, the cook at the hospital where Prabha works. The story unfolds as these women embark on an unexpected trip to a beach town in Ratnagiri, where they reflect on their life choices.
“All We Imagine as Light” has made an impressive debut in French theatres, released across 185 venues on October 2. Distributed by Condor Distribution in France and Spirit Media in India, the film has garnered critical acclaim and audience appreciation, marking it as a standout Indian production in the international market.
Sharing her thoughts, Director Payal Kapadia said, “To have All We Imagine as Light open MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is a tremendous honour. When I was a student in Mumbai, I got a glimpse into world cinema and also cinema from other parts of the country because of MAMI. I am really happy that people in Mumbai will be able to see the film here first.”
The film’s journey to the screen is as compelling as its narrative. Co-produced by Petit Chaos from France and Chalk & Cheese and Another Birth from India, it faced significant hurdles before its triumphant debut at Cannes.
Interim Festival Director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur expressed his enthusiasm for the opening film, noting its significance not only as a Cannes winner but also as an independent film that overcame numerous challenges, particularly in securing funding. He emphasized that “All We Imagine as Light” embodies the kind of cinema MAMI aims to showcase and support.
